ABOUT US

Meandering Bear is a new proudly independent bar which opened in Halifax in September 2019 . It’s from Michael & Jess, the folks behind the award winning Grayston Unity and long time friend Andrew Murphy,

The bar is located close to the Piece Hall/Square Chapel & Westgate Arcade. It offers a great range of cask & keg ales & lagers, cocktails and spirits. Food too with meat/cheese boards, toasted sandwiches and generally food to go with drinks in an informal setting. The vast majority of our suppliers are from Calderdale so local produce is often be used. That’s important to us as we believe completely in the idea of spending locally helps the local community survive and grow.

The name comes from the true story of when Halifax had a zoo, yes really! in Siddal just before WW1. One day a bear managed to escape, meander around a bit before finally being returned to the zoo.

EVENTS

The Unity Trio  jazz band  play on the first Sunday afternoon of the month, occasional Saturday dj sets and we are a venue for Halifax Festival of Words (organised by our other place The Grayston Unity). We have a monthly general knowledge quiz (last Thursday of the month) & a music quiz (2nd Thursday of the month, both start at 8.15pm).

We also do 'Meet the Brewer' nights & 2 beer festivals a year.

CHOSEN CHARITY

We actively collect for Calderdale Womans Centre which for over 25 years has helped women in Calderdale and Kirklees. We do this via a collection tin but also we give money from every coffee sold and through two specially created cocktails.

OUR OTHER PLACE

Looks completely different and has a different drink offer but our approach is the same. The Grayston Unity is a 5 minute walk away in the town’s historical Town Hall area. The bar looks out onto the Town Hall itself, indeed in the summer months we have chairs on the terrace (as well as at the rear). It’s the UK’s smallest music venue (18 capacity) and hosts everything from gigs to social and cultural history talks. It was the Halifax Bar of The Year in 2019, Yorkshire & Humberside Parliamentary Pub of the Year and lots of other things too including a regular spot in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. www.graystonunity.co.uk
